Model answer

The image below shows the process of making carbonated drinks.
Diagram showing how fizzy drinks are manufactured
The picture provided explains the process of how fizzy drinks are manufactured. It appears to be a relatively simple linear procedure with a number of key stages.

At the beginning of this process, the water is cleaned. This is done by filtering it and, subsequently, softening it using various chemicals. After this stage has been completed, the water is pumped into a heater, which is powered by electric, and, following this, it is cooled through a small pipe. At this point, carbon dioxide is added. This creates the bubbles in the drinks and the water turns into carbonated water.

During the next step, colour, syrup and flavourings are added to the sparkling water to create the required drink. Thereafter, the product is filtered for a second time, before being put into bottles or cans. The carbonated beverages are then packaged, and finally, they are transported to retail outlets where they are sold to the consumer.

Vocabulary

fizzy drinks/carbonated beverages = carbonated drinks
a relatively simple linear procedure = a process that starts at one point and ends at another (i.e. not cyclical)
retail outlets = shops
